What is mentoring?

A Mentor is someone to spend time with and who will help you do things you want to do. In some ways, it’s like having a friend; in some ways it’s different.

The mentor is like a friend because he or she
  • can be someone to go out and do things with

  • will help you with things you want to do

  • will listen if you want to talk

  • can help you find solutions to problems

  • will not judge you

  • is not an expert or a professional advisor.

The mentor is different from a friend because he or she
  • is a volunteer for an organisation.

  • receives training and support from the organisation

  • has some limits on what she or he can and cannot do

  • will not tell other people private things about you unless you or someone else is in serious danger. For more on confidentiality.

Mentoring may be useful for you if you need help with things like
  • getting to know your area or the UK

  • making friends

  • preparing for a job

  • signing up with a doctor, dentist, school, college or another service

  • having fun!

Having a mentor through Refugee Resource is
  • free

  • helpful

  • your decision – you do not have to have a mentor.

To find out more or to ask to be matched with a mentor, contact us or ask someone else like a friend, a doctor, or a social worker to do this for you.
