Work placements

A work placement is time that you spend working with an employer, unpaid, so that you

  • get experience of working in the UK

  • learn about the British workplace

  • meet people who do the same sort of work as you want to do

  • improve your skills

  • get a reference at the end

  • feel more confident about applying for paid jobs.

How long?  Placements arranged by Refugee Resource are usually half time (2-3 days a week, or 5 mornings or 5 afternoons) for about 8 weeks. Each placement is different, and some are longer, some are shorter.

What work, what employer?  We talk with you about what sort of job you want in the future and we try to find an employer doing that sort of work. Your placement should be relevant to the paid jobs you will apply for afterwards. We contact an employer you are interested in and talk with them about your CV. If the employer is interested we write an agreement about what work you will do and what training the employer will offer. Then you have an interview with the employer and you both decide whether you want to go ahead.

What support is there?  We pay your bus fares to the placement, and pay for child-care if you need it. We stay in touch with you and the employer during the placement and check that everything is going well. If not we help with any difficulties.
