Information for refugees: work

Looking for jobs

The way people get jobs in the UK may be different from the way you have found work in other countries. Most jobs are advertised in a newspaper or on the internet, and will say when the closing date is. Your application must reach the employer before the closing date.

You can also go to an employment agency to ask for work.

You can use the newspapers and computers in the resource area at Refugee Resource to look for jobs.

Applying for a job

If you see an advertisement for a job that interests you, ask the employer for more information. Sometimes you can get this information from the internet, and sometimes you will have to ask the employer to send it to you in the post. More information about applying for a job.

Job interviews

When you go for an interview, the employer will ask you why you want the job, and will ask other questions about your qualifications and experience for the job. More information about interviews.

If you are enrolled with Refugee Resource employment service we can do a practice interview with you.

References

Usually you need to give a possible employer the names and contact details of two people who can talk honestly about what you would be like in the job. It is best if these are people who have known you at work or college. You should not use someone from your family as a reference.

Work placements

We can arrange an unpaid work placement doing the type of work that interests you, to help you get references and experience of working in the UK. More information about work placements.
