Working with the media

Refugee Resource works with the local media to ensure accurate and fair reporting of issues affecting refugees and asylum seekers and to raise awareness of issues facing them. We alert the local media to relevant stories, and we collaborate with the Oxford Mail from time to time to publish feature articles about the life and experiences of local refugees and asylum seekers.
We also monitor media reports, and alert editors to any reporting that might contravene the Press Complaints Commission guidelines for editors.
In 2006 Refugee Resource was funded by ChangeUp to manage a partnership project dealing with the presentation in the media of black and minority ethnic, refugee, asylum seeker, faith and traveller groups. The partnership included Asylum Welcome, Oxfordshire Racial Equality Council, Oxfordshire County Council’s traveller services and Refugee Resource.
The project included training for refugees, asylum seekers, travellers and members of faith and black and minority ethnic groups to get their voices heard more effectively in the local media. There was also training for staff working with these groups.
